CHIKANOBU YŌSHŪ 揚州周延 (1838–1912)

Toyohara CHIKANOBU (1838–1912, also known as Yōshū CHIKANOBU) was a very busy woodblock artist of Japan's Meiji period (1868-1912). He was very successful in the second half of the 19th century.

Before he started his artistic career in 1875, he was a soldier fighting in many battles. He joined the school of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and after Kuniyoshi’s death he studied with Kunsada.

Chikanobu’s work picture all the typical ukiyo-e genres: Kabuki actors, Kabuki plays , Japanese mythology, battlefields (many of the Sino-Japanese War in the Size of Oban Triptychs), beautiful women (bijin-ga). Chikanobu was best known for picturing lifestyle and fashon. For example, in his series Jidai no kagami (Mirror of the Ages) from 1897.

Most of the woodblock prints by Chikanobu show very strong and bright colours.

Urazato, the Yoshiwara courtesan kneeling in the snow, bound with rope by her employer in the snowy courtyard after discovering her affair with the young samurai, Tokijirō. A lock of hair is clenched between her teeth as she looks up out of the corners of her eyes to find that Tokijirō has come to rescue her. It is based on the Kabuki play Akegarasu Hana no Nureginu, which was shown at the Theatre Ichimuraza in 1851. One day, a handsome visiting priest named Anchin fell in love with the beautiful Kiyo-hime, but after a time he overcame his passion and refrained from further meetings. Kiyohime became furious at the sudden change of heart and pursued him in rage. Anchin and Kiyo-hime met at the edge of the Hidaka River, where the priest asked a boatman to help him to cross the river, but told him not to let her cross with his boat. When Kiyo-hime saw that Anchin was escaping her, she jumped into the river and started to swim after him. While swimming in the torrent of the Hidaka river, she transformed into a large serpent or dragon because of her rage.
